About the Journal

The Brazilian Journal of Intelligence (RBI) is a scientific journal dedicated to advancing knowledge about concepts, processes, practices, relationships, structures and organizations related to intelligence activity.

RBI is published since 2005 by the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN). It is an open access journal and welcomes contributions from researchers with diverse backgrounds and perspectives who share the common ground of scientific rigor and intellectual honesty. The analyzes and opinions published in RBI are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of ABIN.

Intelligence activity is the focus of a multidisciplinary academic field that encompasses a wide range of topics related to the collection, analysis and dissemination of information critical for national security, military and law enforcement purposes. RBI promotes the study of intelligence in the context of contemporary challenges, emphasizing the responsibility of intelligence agencies, their role in defending democratic institutions, and their concern for emerging and unconventional threats.

To learn know more about intelligence activity in Brazil, please refer to the Intelligence Activity Doctrine (in Portuguese).

Intelligence Studies explore the history, structure, functions and methodologies of intelligence agencies, examining how they contribute to the formulation and execution of policies in areas such as national security, international relations, defense, cybersecurity and public safety. They cover essential topics such as counterintelligence and the ethical and legal implications of intelligence operations. Also relevant are issues related to emerging or non-traditional threats, such as extreme climate change-related events, threats to democracy and transnational organized crime, which are increasingly pertinent to national and global security. Additionally, intelligence studies concern future-oriented research such as situational analysis and forward-looking scenarios to anticipate future challenges.
